proof that atheism is a religion
It’s long been a bee in my bonnet that atheists deny we are part of unifying religion of non-belief in gods and other superstitious entities. At long last, proof has come in the form of a British court ruling granting asylum to an Afghan atheist, on religious grounds.
My religion is atheism. I only believe what I see, not things that other people tell me exist in places that neither myself nor any other human can access, involving beings that neither myself nor any other human can see or hear, based on specifically one of many oral traditions handed down through the centuries by mainly men living with very limited access to information (compared to our collective knowledge today), and exploited in almost every context by power-hungry rulers to control the masses.
I really don’t mind atheism being a religion, there’s something rather glamorous about that. Much more glamorous than plain common sense.
If atheism is a religion it begs the question: what do you have “faith” in, then?

Well, of course it’s not a religion, that’s a ridiculous notion. But we do have faith that what we perceive in the material world is accurate.

Wouldn’t that be a “belief”? I believe the sun will come up tomorrow based on past evidence. Faith, though, is belief in something without evidence. Well, that’s the definitions i and my army of Umpa-lumpa men work from.

Well, according to Mirriam-Webster it’s “something that is believed especially with strong conviction”, no reference to evidence. I find it entertaining, but depressing that my writing’s so bad that I have to explain things. It’s a JOKE. Sarcasm. Satirical post. Some Christians fling the most ridiculous accusations round about atheism, and the semantics debate around ‘lack of belief’ can get weary. I thought I’d get in there first with a cheeky post claiming religion and destroying the claim in one fell swoop. Apparently it didn’t read that way – who’d have known! 🙂 Atheism is common sense, but if anyone wants to call it a religion it wouldn’t bother me much (although that would be absurd).

Ahhhhhhh…. I feel so ashamed and naked. I did tell you, didn’t I, that it is presently too hot here to think. Well, that’s my defense for being so slow.

Very kind of you not to blame it on the poorly constructed post … I’m going back into hiding. Thankfully fully clothed.

Reading the other comments I see you had some grief on this one. I don’t feel so bad now and reassign all blame onto the penmanship 🙂 You may now in-turn blame the inclement weather you’re having up there, and the Vikings. We don’t blame the Vikings enough, you know

Bloody Vikings, ruining my fine post …

I am just surprised that an atheist would want to enter an asylum? Or did I misread that?

Boom boom. Lovely to have you gracing my pages with your cutting edge wit once more. 🙂

I notice even the Brazilian was slow off the mark with this post and he blamed the weather?
It’s hot down here as well and we are, after all, ”Just a jump to the right…”

Oh, and nice photo. Might as well start the New Year with a decent creep, hey?

Don’t bother, my photography is uninspired in this world of drizzle. Argentina had its benefits.

Don’t be so glum. Look at Ishaiya, she lives ‘down the road’ from you and takes some pretty good shots.
And the silhouette/sparrow is pretty good.

Oh, so now you’ve laughed at my post, you’re trying to make me depressed about my photos! You’re something else Mr Ark! Go annoy some Christians. (I’m joking, by the way, just in case you don’t catch the tone) 🙂

S’okay. I know….

A political decision is not proof. After all “acts of genocide” are not “genocide”, according to the UN.
More importantly, if an atheist is persecuted the religious reason is ‘someone else’s religion’.
Also, what definition of a religion are you subscribing to for atheism to be a religion?

Well of course it’s not. But I least I’ve said it and ridiculed the notion (or so I thought) before anyone else had a go …

There is no central doctrine to atheism. To be an atheist you are required nothing more than having no belief in gods. I don’t understand how that translates to religion. I am still wondering if this post was made with tongue firmly in cheek..

Good, at least someone wondered …

Interesting post. But I think atheism as a religion is a ridiculous notion just as no car is a car would be considered ridiculous

Well exactly. I thought I’d demonstrated that, while reserving the right to not be bothered what it’s defined as.
