a musical interlude to clear the air
After yesterday’s revolting find in the land of Christian bigots, I’m left with a bad taste in my mouth. What better way to refresh the senses than the Most Perfect Piece of Music Ever Written? Turn it up loud for a wall of sound of the most divinely woven epic that a double string orchestra has ever played. I give you Vaughan Williams, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
If you found that too wonderful for words, you may also enjoy Tippett’s Fantasia Concertante on a Theme of Corelli.
Preferred the second one.

Yeah, well, given the lack of commonality in our music tastes, I’m surprised you could even bear to listen to the Best Piece of Music Ever Written.

Not ‘best’, perhaps one of the most technically gifted composers. And amazing to see performed by virtuoso musicians. But not with the same epic depth of feeling as the Best Piece of Music Ever Written.

Best ever? Big statement, Wisp.

I left it running for a minute or two to see if the chorus was good. I can understand that from an Aussie point of view this might be the best music you’ve ever heard, but as you’ve been living in Brazil for a while I’m going to have to assume you’re joking.

Well, it does score exceptionally high on the Catchy Scale

sorry vi, I will listen when my tinnitus clears up, driving me more insane than Ark and John.
Is that possible?

John? How could that bundle of tropical cheer drive you insane?
Ark? Nuff said.

Aren’t we rude talking about these nice men in public?

Hey, we don’t use the word “tropical” anymore Joeland. We find it rather offensive 😉

We all find things offensive. Maybe not as offensive as Johbjelke. Or as corrupt. Partner was staying in a Sal Army hostel in Brissy and saw his white roller one day. Nice contrast.

I tried to listen. Instead of ringing in one ear, the violins made me feel the whole room was ringing. So that was the end of that.
My favourite VW is probably Serenade to Music. I love it. Probably comes of singing it. ‘Such harmony is in immortal souls’ is just glorious. I did do a post about War Poetry some time ago and used a link to Dona Nobis Pacem, (I may have sung that too, can’t remember) but I see YT has removed the vid 😦 Suppose I may have to look for another.
I’ve got a classical music post part drafted. Serenade will be included.

Thoroughly enjoyed “the Most Perfect Piece of Music Ever Written,” I’ve always enjoyed Corelli, even a work based on one of his themes – and in return, I’d like to offer, “The Best Coin Ever Spent” – if life could only be this way —
Believe it or not, it’s a TV commercial for Banc De Sabadell — if more commercials could be this uplifting, I wouldn’t use my TIVO to tune them out.

Sorry, I hate Hymn to Joy. Had to turn it off, shudder. It was one of the first pieces of music I learned on the violin and all I remember is the fingering – 223openopen321openopen12211. (it was a bit out of tune too)

The Britten piece would be good in concert, but it’s not a moving piece to listen to generally. I was excited at the thought of a double piano concerto but it did nothing for me on the first hearing at least. I prefer the more obvious Grieg and Rachmaninov for piano pieces. I still think I accurately identified the Best Piece of Music Ever Written, don’t you?
