why do people believe in the Christian god God?
Blog buddy Ark has a deep spiritual itch and is always trying to find out why people are Christians. Every few months he churns out a post asking Christians to help him understand why they believe that the god God and the stories in the Bible are real.
Unfortunately, Ark is an angry atheist who shouts at Christians when they comment on his posts and he therefore doesn’t tend to get much relevant feedback. So I thought it would be nice if I helped him out by compiling a list of five very good reasons why people believe in the Christian god God.
- From the point of view of the average human brain, the world is amazing, we are amazing. We must have been made by something, and the Christian story has a sense of history that seems plausible.
- People hate the fact that quite often our instincts urge us to behave in ways that go against our logical thinking. Christianity gives Christians something to blame this on, the opportunity to wallow in it, and, crucially, the idea that a superior being will forgive ‘bad’ behaviour.
- Christianity gives people a friend in their head. Not just any friend: the nicest, strongest, wisest friend-with-a-plan in all existence, listening to everything they say and blessing them with happy coincidences and sad trials, as and when he judges it appropriate.
- There are very good reasons to not acknowledge that life could be any other way: showing a lack of faith by even questioning the god God is a frightening prospect. Not only could the god God be disappointed (either sad or furious), a Christian could potentially lose all their friends and family.
- Just look at the figures – two billion people can’t be wrong!

Ark, I am Christian only because I am persuaded by God to believe, I did not want to be Christian, I did not grow up in a Christian home, the only reason I believe in God is because the Holy Spirit that dwells in me confirms with my spirit that I am born from above (born of the Spirit).

So exactly how did ”God” persuade you?

Ark, God gave me the understanding that His Son is the Messiah, to believe God’s Son Yeshua is the Messiah, is to believe in God, after God persuaded me to believe His Son is the Messiah, I believed in God, after God baptized me in the Holy Spirit, which was immediately after God persuaded me to believe His Son is the Messiah, I knew without a doubt that God is real.

Ark, God persuaded me by simply giving me the understanding that His Son died for me, that His Son is the Messiah, that’s it, it was very simple, & still is, God gives me the understanding that He exists by persuading me to believe His Son is the Messiah.

Arch, not my ears, my heart, God opened my heart to believe Yeshua is the Messiah, God made me believe in His Son for God’s purpose, not mine, I was predestined by God to be born from above (born of the Spirit), when it was time for God to persuade me to believe in His Son, God made it happen, God humbled me & I had no choice, I believed Yeshua is the Messiah & then God baptized me in the Holy Spirit all at the same time, I was living in Hawaii at the time that God made that happen, in an instant God changed my life, just as Paul was changed in the book of Acts, it was awesome !

Peter, God has definitely predestined some people to be born of the Spirit, & God has predestined people to not be born of the Spirit, that is what the New Testament says, since I am Christian (born of the Spirit), I cannot deny that truth. When someone who is not born of the Spirit dies, the person is eternally separated from God, that’s what I believe.

If Yahweh existed, and what you say here were true, he’d be an asshole. Or a monster.
Since that conclusion is inconsistent with the propositions of him being good, kind, loving, and fair, this gives us good reason to question the premise of whether he actually exists.

The preacher spoke about Christ, but the preacher believed in free will, so he wasn’t speaking all truth, at the end of the program the preacher recited the “sinner’s prayer”, & I said it along with him as I was watching the show, because I said that prayer, I believed that I made the choice, & I believed that lie for 18 years, the truth is, from the moment that God gave me the faith to believe in His Son, I was born of the Spirit, the prayer that I said after I believed in Christ was confirmation that I was born of the Spirit, the prayer was not what led me to be born of the Spirit, no one has to say anything to be born of the Spirit, Romans 10:9-10 is written to the church, therefore that part of scripture is talking someone who is already born of the Spirit, it is not talking about before a person is born of the Spirit, the teaching that says, say the sinner’s prayer & you will be born of the Spirit, is false.

Oh and as far as evidence on how I knew god was real, here’s what I have: I had a voice in my head that spoke to me occasionally, and I knew it was god. There were also “impressions” from the holy spirit which moved me to behave in certain ways, and I would be in a deep transcendent state during prayer that was most certainly induced by god. Not to mention the bible was very powerful evidence. Oh and nuns…the catholic nuns are evidence, because who would be chaste for their entire lives if jezus wasn’t real?
Now don’t mess with me and tell me this isn’t good enough for you, Ark. It’s pretty much the same evidence as two other billion people, so I’m in good company. 😛
PS I’m astonished to hear the Stone God was ever a Crispyan! How long did that miracle go on for?

I love this: It’s like we Christians love the idea of grace, but we don’t want it distributed indiscriminately- we want make rules about it and dole it out carefully and strategically. It’s like we’re worried that if everybody knows that she’s loved and accepted by God – it will be Grace Anarchy! I want that. I want Grace Anarchy. I want people to be free to be who they are. It makes sense to me that the free-er people are, the BETTER people are. I believe in people because I believe in God. I think God knew what God was doing when God made each of us.

Maybe I don’t understand enough about evolution to process everything. Evolution is logical to me, but sometimes I can understand the religious sense of “all this can’t have occurred randomly, it can’t have come from nothing!”. Usually when I’m sleep deprived and not firing on many cylinders. I argue against it because it’s ridiculous, but it’s a base feeling – like the one that can believe in ghosts and tree spirits. I believe in tree spirits.

The 2 billion number is thoroughly bogus. There are no “de-enrollment” forms to fill out. I, for example, am still counted in the 2 billion. You are still counted in that 2 billion. Ark, heaven save us, is still counted in that 2 billion.

I suspect it’s not completely bogus. A lot of people passively believe in a god, and by default of their birth, it’s their own version of the Christian god. They won’t be on any lists. So we cancel each other out.

I wouldn’t be so certain. Example: of my closest 20 or so friends from school only one goes to church today, and that is only because his wife makes him. That’s 19 out of 20 you can strike off the list. Sure, people still rely on the church for life events (Birth, Death, Marriage), but that does not make them practicing/believing Catholics. I’d like to see the church attendance data. It does exist, the Vatican did a global poll some years ago, but of course they never released the findings.

Just an observation on a common fallacy Violet that you alluded to, and which many agree.
‘A superior being will forgive bad behaviour.’ This makes God very small, for my behaviour can be worse than yours, and yours worse than others.
But morality is not spirituality. The Lord Christ did not come to make a bad person good, but to make a dead man alive.

There is the notion and misunderstanding that a ‘crutch’ is needed, but healthy people who can walk find far better reasons that to have their guilt assuaged.

It seems to me, that sometimes rather reasonable people have the most unreasonable reasons to believe the most unreasonable stuff. Most often this happens as a part of cultural heritage. Like when people think their home country is the best in the world, because it best fits their own cultural expectations among countries. Such beliefs form our identities and as a result any questioning or critical thinking of such is directed towards the self image and identity of the person. It kind of deludes people to take their intuition at face value, wich they might not do on some other, less personal issues.
Intuition may be a good guide in situations for wich it has evolved for, like rapid descision making, when one has not got the time (or brainpower) to contemplate the options, but it gets abused, when we humans use it for making up our minds about stuff that we could be analytical over. Though, even such misuse is natural, because most animals do not have very analytical minds. In that sense intuition only resembles us being instinctive. It is kind of ironic, that the people who have the biggest bias against evolution are in a sense most bound by their animalistic traits in this single issue.
As I have never been a member of that “2 billion” referred to here in the conversation, I have never known any good reasons to believe in anything as unnatural. Or even any reasons, that would have seemed like good reasons to me. All that I have been offered as reasons have seemed childish to me from the time when I first learned how to make the distinction between fairytales and reality.
Over time, I have come to doubt, that the reasons religious people offer for me to believe are the reasons they themselves believe. I do not say, they are being dishonest, rather that on some level they understand, that the emotional reasons, that are hard to put to words and often very personal, they have to believe would not convince me. So, they try and try to come up with sciency sounding and logically flawed absurd arguments, they think support what they allready belive, because they have learned from early age onwards that the belief thing of having faith itself is a virtue. But it is not. As they seem to be able to acknowledge on some level since they desperately try to come up with these arguments, that are convincing only to people who allready belive what they believe. Am I far of the mark here? It is me just guessing and analysing my experiences, but consequentally, totally from an outsiders perspective.

Excellent observation. I can’t tell whether people like that are attracted to Christianity or if the Christian belief systems draws this out of them. Probably both.
It’s difficult to tell what brings individuals to believe in any religion. I just watched a weird video on Insanity’s blog about a lesbian academic and her conversion. Weird because it was insanely dull and the process made no sense – she claimed it was reading the Bible that led to her conversion but it was so garbled there must have been other issues there. She came from a Catholic education background so I expect she had typical Catholic guilt hanging round her head and reading the Bible hooked on to that.
I’ve been lurked a lot this evening, and I read another unusual post from someone who said they’d given up trying to be a Christian because they had no sense of the personal relationship with the god God that Christians believe exists. What is everyone else feeling?

When she clicks on the sidebar (of individual commenters) of an active thread, it doesn’t take her to the individuals comments. Instead, it takes her to the OP. She doesn’t have that problem on any other blog.
