A challenge was set by Ain’t No Shrinking Violet to find a Christian with views more vile than the man who wanted to treat his woman like a cow/sex toy. Personally, I thought this would be hard to beat. However, the inimitable Clare Flourish has come up with a possible challenger in her conversation with Holly T. Ashley:
Stoning? Personally- Oh absolutely! Do I wish we would bring stoning back – as barbaric as it seems- it would most certainly put an end to foolish crimes. I do wish that we would impose the death Penalty- quickly and bring back corporal punishment to the classroom- but then again, if we would not “spare the rod” at home, then corporal punishment in the school would not be necessary.
John Zande will be delighted to finally find a real live Christian who can answer YES with such enthusiasm to his stoning question.
At the end of the day, for someone who wants to glue herself so closely to the rules of the Bible, Holly is taking a big risk publishing her beliefs on the internet or speaking on the radio. After all, a passing male might read it of hear her and have the sinful experience of being ‘taught’ by a mere woman.

I read through that thread – truly gag-worthy. I really wish these ‘types’ would read the Homeschoolers Anonymous site. Not ‘sparing the rod’ is what these now-adult children experienced; many of them are still dealing with the consequences of their legalistic, patriarchal environments. It’s not pretty.
As my daughter (who has three children, five and under) says – “If you don’t want children to hit, don’t hit THEM”. I am in front of teenagers (14 -18) all day long (most days), and I’ve never once had the urge to hit one. I give lots of hugs, though – you’d be amazed how many young people still like to get them. 🙂

I have the urge to hit. I’m a short-tempered control freak with a very strong-willed daughter. However, I’m lucky enough to have read about child-rearing outcomes and to live in an age where my instincts (which may come from my own childhood) are logically countered. I wish I was just naturally nice like you and your daughter, but you can’t have everything! 🙂

I wouldn’t say that I was naturally nice, Violet, (in fact, in many instances I can be a ‘witch with a B’) and I shared on another blog that I did spank my own children when they were little. (They tell me now that they can’t remember but it’s true – I thought that was the thing to do). I feel bad about it now and have apologized to them. I have seen, however, that our children are bringing up our grandchildren a very different way. They talk to them constantly and don’t use corporal punishment. I have learned that it’s a better way to bring up children. (Believe me, they get frustrated and I’ve heard them say that they FEEL like smacking them; they just don’t)
Also, I was much more strict at school when I first started my career than I am now. I have learned that you get more flies with honey than vinegar.

Phew, that makes me feel better, hehe. Corporal punishment is clearly the stupid way out, for people who can’t explain why children should follow rules. I just read Arch saying he told his son he could do what he wanted as long as he didn’t hurt himself or other people. That makes sense.

You’re right, he said some truly foul and disturbing things. Although hitting people with stones until they die because they break laws, especially in an era where we can easily lock dangerous people away and attempt to help them change, is foul and disturbing too.

The downright ignorance of this kind of Christian does bother me. There was method in some of the seeming madness of Jewish laws. We can understand to a certain extent why they were worried about property, about punishment and how they tried to resolve these issues in their primitive society. To be stupid enough to think their solutions could make sense in our current society is so ridiculously moronic it’s broken the scale …

Agreed. Kinda’ feel sorry for her, but i can at the very least sympathise with her attraction to the idea of a cosmic bully who’s on her side.
That makes me wonder: does any kid have boring imaginary friends, or are they all kickass cool?

For Holly to suggest public stoning is hideous, and her views are hateful, offensive, and bigoted…yet it is still conjecture (thank god God). Cow guy actually rebuked his wife with the bible and demanded sex from her on multiple occasions, and him and his kind like to find young women to prey upon. It does not help the gross-out factor that “good christian women” have been brainwashed to the point of thinking men like this are God, and are willing to become lifetime sex toys, even on their *deathbeds* (did you see that part in the comments?).
I just threw up all over my keyboard again. Cow guy still wins the most disgustingly vile award IMHO, Violet, but this was a worthy contender.

I agree. Cow guy is still worse. Holly has a reason to want to hurt people and see them bleed. Although sick and demented, it can be rationally justified. Cow guy doesn’t even have a hair in the rational world.

Oh that’s right, she’s not married! Everything being conjecture makes it much easier to swallow. I also suspect she’s never seen anyone die, because if she had any idea how that goes, it’d be common sense that sex on your deathbed isn’t a great idea. I’ve seen lots of people die since I’ve been a nurse, and not one of them was up for sex with either their spouse, or with the hottest 20-something ass in the universe.

I find this very disturbing — as disturbing as the power cowward who rapes his servant wife and uses her as an object to masturbate with.
Holly writes in her about page that she’s a certified behavioral health counselor – specializing in family violence, abuse and neglect. Based on the OP quotes, what she is specializing in is promoting violence, abuse and neglect. She’d be a great recruit for ISIS.

I do not get it. How would stoning supposedly stop some form of crime? Like the capital punishment has stopped murder, maybe? Where do these people get it this wrong how the society actually works in our day and age, when we the actual information on the issue is awailable to anyone who can write their opinions to the internet?
A nother thing I can not understand is, how anyone would think a god that supposedly tells people to stone other people to death for any crimes, let alon for stuff that is in no way criminal, or even mildly harmfull like homosexuality, could be considered “benevolent”. How? Such a practice is terribly harmfull not only to anyone convicted, but to the entire society as it hardens the attitudes, causes emotional distress, lessens social empathy, makes violence into an everyday entertainment and damages and scars the involved and all wittnesses emotionally.
Even if the worshippers of such a god somehow feel they have a good reason to believe, that this same god has actually been “benevolent” towards themselves, it reveals the worshipper only to be a terribly selfish and a real self centered egotist. If this god has supposedly been “benevolent” towards the worhippers own people, it reveals tribal moralism, and if the worshipper thinks this god has been good towards some random individuals, then that should not seem like random benevolence, rather random evil as it equally is not benevolent towards an equally random group of people who might have been in much more need of help. Besides, how does one assign anything good to any particular god, that has presented absolutely none what so ever even remotely objective evidence of ever having existed?
The third thing is – and I have studied ancient societies, mind you – that this god had very poor excuse to tell the ancient Hebrews to stone people to death even considering, their socioeconomic cultural situation. When the very same god alledgedly gives instructions on how to keep slaves, it can not be excused by saying, that these people had no means to incarcerate criminals. If they had the means to force some people into slavery, they surely had means to imprison criminals. And all that shamelessly ridiculous apologetic nonsense, that the slavery was their social security system, should be trashed by anyone who has ever read the Bible and if they are honest to themselves.
We can very well understand why their ancient society decided upon such inhumane methods of punishment and we can see why they decided to have laws on how to handle slaves, and it is even rather easy to see why and how they came to justify these brutal laws by the authority of an imaginary god character. However, understanding this much does not by any means justify us accepting their behaviour as moral on any level. If we do not impose our own better values on them while examining their culture, we only end up in total cultural relativism in wich this same god could just as well have given Hitler his visions as he believed on what should be done to the Jews and we have no right to second guess Herr Hitler for bringing about the true will of this immoral god.

That is just so weird. Could that really be what she believes? But then, from whence did appear the woman Jesus alledgedly stopped from being stoned to death, if this sort of punishment somehow magically prevents people acting against the law? Was she just some exeption to confirm the exeptionally decriminalized society, or a mere tool for Jesus to make a particular parable? I just do not get it…
