catholic condom catastrophe
Abortion is not the lesser of two evils. It is a crime. …On the other hand, avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil. In certain cases, as in this one, or in the one I mentioned of Blessed Paul VI, it was clear. I would also urge doctors to do their utmost to find vaccines against these two mosquitoes that carry this disease. (Pope Francis)
The head of the Roman Catholic Church has thrown many of his faithful flock into a state of wild disarray. For Catholics all over the world, it has come as a shock to them after lifetimes of avoiding sex (or only having sex if they could bear the thought of having yet another baby) that handy devices that stop sperm hitting eggs and creating unwanted babies, could be described by anyone other than the devil as potentially useful and not completely evil:
For those of us who have struggled with and committed to church teachings on sex and marriage this comes as a major blow. (Faith in our Families)
It’s difficult to get into the Catholic mindset on this one. The Catholic Church as a huge global movement has been restricting women’s choices and lives for thousands of years. They have been condemning people with dangerous diseases, most notably AIDS, to continue spreading disease among populations and to children, by restricting access to our modern friend and protector, the condom.
Some Catholics are interpreting the Pope’s suggestion that condoms might not be Pure Evil, as further indication that he knows nothing about what the Christian god God wants. According to their brand of theology, it’s more likely that a benevolent god would want HIV to rampantly spread through the world, or babies be seriously malformed by the Zika virus, than let love-making couples anywhere near birth control that can also help with disease control and the avoidance of devastating birth defects.
My favourite Scottish heretic group, Catholic Truth, who long ago placed themselves closer to the Christian god God than some old dude in Rome, indulged in this exchange about the dear old man:
Have you heard of (yet another) in flight interview in which this poor Pope was questioned on the use of condoms for prevention of disease? If so what link can you share? I would substantiate if I can for a priest who asks me to investigate. This is more disgraceful if true than silly remarks about American politics.
Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have both made dangerous statements about condom use.
The mind boggles that possible condom use in the face of deadly or devastating disease could, to anyone, be ‘disgraceful’ or ‘dangerous’. Apparently it is a scandal that he has “suggested that there is a case to be made for women at risk of the Zika virus to use contraception.”
Is there any hope for people so severely brainwashed by unethical, illogical and even unbiblical nonsense?
Births, Death, Marriages. The Catholic Church is nothing but a party/ceremony hire company.

I disagree. They use their power in fulfilling these traditional rites to brainwash people into being superstitious idiots. Few escape completely unscathed.

A person with HIV needs to either cap it or put a cork in it, regardless of the condom because HIV is so deadly.
Therefore the argument presented here against the Catholic Church is just more atheist hatred and bigotry.

I think you’d make more sense here SOM if you’d focused on promiscuity, to which I’d agree, although it applies to all STD’s. If a person contracts HIV, and can lead a normal life with drugs, wouldn’t you say it’s fine to have consensual sex with their partner?

Yes, John,
I’m constantly thinking promiscuity.
That’s because men and women hump and thump like little bunnies at nearly every opportunity.

That sounds practical. It’s clear looking around the world that simply telling people not to have sex has a great impact. Would you describe yourself as having any sort of sex drive? I often speculate that the people who suggest this don’t fall in the average range.

Som, talk about hatred and bigotry… According to the Catholic Church, the mere action of attempting to prevent pregnancy is mortal sin, evil punishable by eternal torment.

KIA,
Pregnancy is sacred, not some sort of horrid affliction or disease.
Among all creatures on planet Earth, reproduction is what defines fitness (Darwin).
Catholicism is harmonious with Mother Nature, that is, man must not interfere with what She deems of prime importance.
Therefore, birth control is a crime against Mother Nature’s most important activity and objective which is reproduction (Darwin).
Catholicism has long expressed in its religious doctrines what modern science (Darwin) has proven to be so.
Here again, in your argument against Darwin and the Catholic Church, you demonstrate that atheism is actually a rejection of modern science and so is horrifically, tragically retrograde.

Still not atheist. Just not Christian anymore.

KIA,
It’s the thought that counts:
You think like an atheist.
Many Christians too, and unwittingly.
They think things like liberty, prosperity and justice just happen all by themselves.
Or that what needs to happen is for some strongman (“caudillo” in Latin American parlance) like President Obama or THE Donald to speak them into existence with an eloquently spoken word.

i THINK like a non christian… not the same at all. although in your binary Silent Mind those are the same thing, they are not in REALITY

KIA,
Thinking like a non-Christian means that you think in a very retrograde, irrational manner.
The Christian West is the only civilization in human history that progressed past the slave and beast of burden as engines of the economy.
And the philosophy which I use to classify your kind of thinking was developed by Aristotle and forms the basis of how modern man classifies the items in world around him.
It’s called systematic thinking and forms the foundation of science.
You have stated clearly that you reject modern science and the systematic thinking that makes it possible.
That makes you a retrograde primitive barbarian.
It is by classifying things according to their nature that we learn about ourselves and the world around us.

I never said I reject modern science. And I think it’s rude of you to say I think in a retrograde barbaric way.

(psst KIA, tip-of-the-day, SOM’s not a troll, because he gets annoyed when that’s suggested, but he may well be a cheeky wind-up merchant or someone with a particularly special experience of life. Point being, don’t bother getting irritated if he says things that are a bit of a stretch, just gaze in wonder at the curious angle he finds)

its just mind boggling how he so poorly and intentionally misrepresents my positions and thinks he can reach into my mind to ‘know’ how i think and what i think… then be so utterly wrong.

KIA,
Your beliefs are inconsistent with modern science.
Another thing atheists do is masquerade their retrograde superstitious thinking behind science.

“Sacred”? Want to explain then why 75% of all pregnancies are naturally aborted?

Yes Christians really have no good way to explain miscarriages. They make sense from a naturalistic perspective but not a Christian perspective.

Peter,
Mother Nature does what she does according to her nature.
Mankind, the same.
How can two totally different things be judged as if they were equal to one another?

John,
The logical fallacy you are committing here is to apply the same standard to Mother Nature as to one of her creations.
That is a comparison between apples and oranges.
Mother Nature has no need of concepts like “sacred.”
However, such concepts are helpful to man because they orient his heart, mind and behavior toward what is good.

So you fully support a woman’s right to end a pregnancy up to week 25, playing in the safe side of brain activity?

John,
What does Mother Nature know of “a woman’s right to end a pregnancy up to week 25.”
That’s just another one of your hallucinations of the arbitrary, masquerading as a natural law.

I would not choose the word sacred to describe pregnancy, but I would say it is all part of God’s plan for that woman’s life and that of the father/husband of the child who dies in utero. God knows if the child would suffer due to genetic abnormalities once born or if He has other plans for the mother of the child. I wish God could explain why miscarriages occur to each mother &/or the family the child is a part of each time a miscarriage occurs. I have lost multiple pregnancies and the pain and grief that comes when a child who is so greatly loved (in many situations, I am not naive in thinking every miscarriage is deeply mourned or each child truly wanted,) but God knows why. I have since learned unless God provides a miracle I will never be able to carry a pregnancy to term and I will never hold my children in my arms while here on earth. I am comforted in knowing that they are with the best caregiver possible and also that they never felt pain, sorrow or any of the other negative and painful parts of life, my children only knew the love that was felt for them and the love of God.
John, I don’t know if anyone here on earth with our limited understanding could tell you exactly why each miscarriage happened to each woman every time it occurs.
